About Rough Mix.

Rough Mix is Magnetic North's inter-disciplinary creative development programme. It is an opportunity for theatre makers to collaborate with other practitioners, try out new ideas and introduce them to an audience. We bring together a small group of practitioners from different disciplines and give them time to start developing new projects in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. The practitioners work together with a group of performers over a two week period before making a work in progress showing at the end. Magnetic North believes that this project offers a unique opportunity for both established and emerging artists.

The 2010 Rough Mix programme ran from January 11th-22nd 2010 at Dance Base, Edinburgh, and was supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Scottish Arts Council. The artists taking part were:

  • Ruth Barker - visual artist
  • Nicholas Bone - director
  • Catriona MacInnes - film-maker
  • Linda McLean - playwright
  • Ian Spink - choreographer/director

Who worked with emerging theatre artist Harry Wilson and performers Catherine Gillard, Veronica Leer, Kirstin Murray, Michael Sherin and David Walshe.

Magnetic North is a theatre company based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was formed in 1999 by theatre and opera director Nicholas Bone to create and develop new work with playwrights and other practitioners. The company's work has been funded by Scottish Arts Council, Glasgow City Council, Awards for All, the Jerwood Foundation, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Peggy Ramsay Foundation.

Magnetic North works with actors, playwrights, designers and composers to produce plays that are stylish, articulate and individual. The company places the writer at the centre of the play-making process, whether the play is a new commission or an existing text. They encourage playwrights to experiment with form, structure, content and narrative. The main focus of the company’s development work is Rough Mix, an opportunity for theatre makers to collaborate with other practitioners, try out new ideas and introduce them to an audience.

Now we sail, I sail, I see the sea before me

We sail, I sail, I see the sea before me

We sail, I sail, I see the sea before me

We sail, I sail, I see the sea before me

We sail, I sail, I see the sea before me

And I can hear the sirens

Calling O O O

Calling O O O

They call me O O O

They call me O O O

They call me O O O Odysseus:

I am the greatest hero, husband, king

I am the only hero, husband, king

I am the greatest father, husband, son

I am the only father, husband, son

I am the one who is wrathful and hated

I am everyone who has ever deceived

I am every song about me

I am every song about me

I am every song

I am every fraud

I am every lie

I am every intuition

I am every trick

I am every gift

I am every inspiration in the moment of need

I am every need in the moment of inspiration:

I am the failure to die in battle

I am the failure to keep others safe

I am the failure not to want my fame

I am the failure not to tell my own tale well

I am the failure not to need to be everything, everyone, brilliant and glittering and bold. I am you.

I am always you.

I am everyman

I am everyman

You can be me. Please. Be. Me.

Please.

My ears are open...

And I can hear the sirens

I can hear you, sirens

I can hear the sirens

I can hear you, sirens

I can hear the sirens

I can hear you, sirens

I can hear the sirens

I can hear you, sirens

I can hear the sirens

I can hear you, sirens,

You call me

You call me

You call me

You call me, and I am tied.

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O O O

You call me O O O Odysseus:
